The ADA and Opportunities for Students

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 protects the civil rights of people living with particular disabilities, so that they might participate as fully as possible in society. For students, Title II of the ADA added to the protections and benefits under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975. Together these laws make it illegal to discriminate against students with disabilities by denying them opportunities or educational services offered to other students or by refusing to accommodate students with disabilities so that they enjoy the same opportunities and services.
